A villa bathed in light, lightness and life.

Brief and context

The luxurious 5 BHK villa at Embassy Boulevard, Bangalore is an invitation to serene suburban living, with touches of art and articulation. Designed as a short-term home for a repeat client, the interiors of the —- sq. ft residence were put together keeping a minimally invasive, clutter-free approach. The home includes formal living and family spaces, a master bedroom, two guest rooms, and a study or home office.Responding to the constraints of avoiding any panelling or chipping processes on the walls and ceilings of this rented property, the designers turned to art to add value and substance to the abundant spaces.

Layout and Programme

The orientation and surrounding greens make for stunning views, framed through generous french doors and seamless glazed windows. An open staircase core, with ‘floating’ treads becomes the illuminated heart of the home. The black panelling of the staircase balustrade and treads becomes a dramatic, awe-inspiring backdrop to the restrained, delightful touches of accents in the living and dining areas.

Every space, from the living, dining to sleeping areas hold a curated and handpicked selection of art pieces, wall accents or lifestyle objects, demanding attention without becoming overpowering. The furniture around the house is a blend of the clients’ existing furniture and new, leading to an interesting mix of weathered textures and glints of newness.

Design details and materiality

The living spaces on the ground floor are enveloped in diffused light from sheer curtains. An ensemble of muted tones with a contrasting couch and brass-turned coffee tables, the living area is an easy going zone opening out into the lush outdoors. Large lamp shades hover gently over conversations in the space, creating an almost dramatic sense of suspension. Console tables and credenzas in dark polished wood occupy restful corners, accompanied by iconic wall art pieces. An extended portico overlooking the pool is equipped with outdoor lounging furniture.

The masterbedroom carries forward the stately yet minimal ambiance, with a four-poster bed in polished wood becoming the centrepiece of the room. Soft furnishings in brushed blues and cobalt add a sense of gravity, while diffused light through sheer curtains illuminates the room in a soft glow. A series of abstract leaves in metal mesh on the wall echo the greenery outside!

In keeping with the client’s requirements for a study, a sleek table with an impressive bookcase together creates a space for quiet contemplation. Along the lines of mid-century modern and rustic contemporary, the arrangement and design of furniture brings together the best of both worlds. An ‘archives’ cabinet holds precious memories, books and keepsakes from the client’s personal journey.

The two guestrooms are rendered in different moods and qualities, but with the same intention of offering peace and calm to its users. Both spaces use whites and textures of wood as their palette, while one offers soft cushioned whites as the bedback, the other showcases grooved wood as the headboard, enveloped in soft whites. Across all spaces, the design challenge lay in using various elements to create a memorable living experience, without touching the existing shell or puncturing any surfaces.
